3 of my Favorite Destinations Where You Can See Magical Butterflies Up Close
There is something both majestic and simple about butterflies. Seeing them up close and in large numbers is a powerful and beautiful experience. Here are three terrific places where you can immerse yourself in butterflies.
Monarch Butterfly Grove in Pismo Beach is one of only five sites in the country to host an average of 25,000 butterflies annually. Pismo Beach is on the Central Coast of California halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco making it an ideal location to see them as they migrate towards Mexico. The best time for a visit is between October and February and the 26 miles of coastline is a beautiful place with or without the Monarchs. Plan your visit at www.experiencepismobeach.com
Oklahoma is in the migration path for butterflies during the spring and summer. Interstate 35 is known as “Monarch Highway” because of the large numbers gliding along with it. Oklahoma City has several ways to experience the butterflies including a 15 acre indoor/outdoor habitat called Myriad Gardens and The Butterfly Garden at The Oklahoma City Zoo. There are several events that take place around the butterflies and you can learn more about them at www.okiesformonarchs.org.
The largest butterfly conservatory in the USA is Butterfly Wonderland in Scottsdale, Arizona. This indoor/outdoor facility is located at the Arizona Boardwalk and is open year-round. There are guided tours, immersive exhibits, a 3-D theater, and many opportunities for guests of all ages to learn about them. www.butterflywonderland.com
