When you think about camping and parks, Yellowstone is probably at the top of the list since it is the nation’s first national park. Established in 1872, Yellowstone is large, with over two million acres. To give you an idea of just how large the park is, it takes more than two hours to drive from the South Entrance to the North Entrance. This is why you want to have an idea of where you want to be if you’re planning a Yellowstone National Park RV Camping trip.

While some guests prefer Yellowstone lodges, others enjoy camping. There are 12 campgrounds throughout the park. If you’re planning a trip, here are 5 top spots for Yellowstone National Park RV Camping.

1.   Madison Campground

If you want to be close to West Yellowstone, the Madison Campground is your best bet as it’s the closest you’re going to get to that location. It’s also near the town of West Yellowstone.

It features more than 270 non-electric campsites, so you won’t find anything with full hook-ups. But, it does accommodate tents, trailers, and RV’s. There are 14 public restrooms with flush toilets and faucets as well as cold running water. There are also dishwashing stations near most of the restrooms.

If you’re looking for a shower, there are none on-site, but there are pay showers available at the Old Faithful Inn, 16 miles from Yellowstone Park, and at West Yellowstone, which is about 14 miles away.

When it comes to activities, the Madison Campground is a popular spot for people who love fly-fishing. The nearby Madison River is one of the best spots for that.

Each site comes with its own fire pit and picnic table. If you’re thinking of this as your spot for Yellowstone National Park RV Camping, it’s best to make a reservation as soon as you can because they book quickly. Reservations are available online or by phone up to a year in advance.

2.   Grant Village Campground

If you’re looking for RV sites that are on the larger side, the Grant Village Campground may be on your list. With 430 sites available, Grant Village can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs. Many people refer to this as the best park campground because it’s closest to the shower facilities.

As with the other Yellowstone National Park RV Camping sites, there are no full hook-ups available. There are 17 public restrooms with flushable toilets and faucets with cold running water. As far as showers, there are pay showers available at the nearby Camper Services facility, as well as machines for laundry. Each site does come with its own picnic table and fire grate.

Also, Grant Village campground has a full-service restaurant nearby as well as a gas station, post office, and general store. If you’re one who likes hikes, park rangers are available for guided hikes at the nearby West Thumb Geyser Basin in the summer.

It’s important to know that not every site will accommodate RVs. The maximum length allowed for those that do is 40 feet. Keep this in mind for planning purposes.

3.   Bridge Bay Campground

Located in the park’s southwest area, Bridge Bay Marina is near Yellowstone Lake at 7,800 feet in elevation. There are more than 400 campsites and is a popular area for fishing and boaters. There are boat rentals, fishing gear, and guided tours available for guests. People also choose this as their Yellowstone National Park RV Camping site because it has excellent views with wooded areas and some open meadows.

While there are no full hook-ups, overnight visitors have access to flushing toilets and dishwashing stations. All campsites come with a picnic table and fire grate.

You can reserve your RV camping site up to one year in advance. It’s advised to do so because this campground does get full over the summer.

4.   Lewis Lake Campground

If you’re looking for a quieter campground that is less busy, Lewis Lake Campground may be the perfect spot for you. It’s located between Lewis and Shoshone Lake in southern Yellowstone.

There are 85 sites that are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There are no electrical hook-ups and no dump station on site. Overnight guests share access to vault toilets and potable water.

While this site is a gateway into Yellowstone National Park, it’s also nearby Grand Teton National Park and the scenic Teton Mountain Range. It’s important to note that the wooded campsites at Lewis Lake Campground can only accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs that are up to 25 feet in length.

5.   Tower Fall Campground

Tower Fall Campground, located in Yellowstone’s northern region, rounds out our list of the five top spots for Yellowstone National Park RV Camping. Known for its incredible views of Tower Creek, a stay here also gives you easy access to attractions like Lamar Valley and the Black Canyon of the Yellowstone.

This is a smaller campground with just 31 campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis. This site is typically best for tent campers. While there are no hookups available or dump station, all overnight guests have access to potable water and restrooms. Each campsite also features a fire ring and picnic table.

If you enjoy hiking, there is a six-mile trail nearby that leads to the summit of Mount Washburn. Horseback riding and dining are just a short drive away.

Have a Blast While Yellowstone National Park RV Camping

When it comes to Yellowstone National Park RV Camping, there are many sites to choose from depending on where you want to stay and what you’re looking for in an RV site. As you can tell, they differ in what they offer. Do your homework and decide which ones have the best features for you and you’re bound to have a trip you’ll never forget.
