Rachel and I met at Social Media on the Sand at Beaches in Turks and Caicos. I was immediately drawn to her style and energy. We formed a fast friendship that has continued and grown over the past few years.
Travel Mom: Is travel something you are passionate about? If so, why?
Rachel Pitzel: I’m extremely passionate about travel. In a normal (non-COVID) year, I do between 15-20 trips with my family.
My grandparents lived on the East Coast my whole life while I was born and raised in Los Angeles. There were years we flew to see them every single month! I started flying on my own at 5 (I know, I was a precocious, independent traveler), so I caught the travel bug early.
My grandfather was always offering to take me abroad. Sadly, I constantly turned him down. I have no idea why I did that, but I did. He died of a massive heart attack the first day back to school in my second semester of college. Shortly after that, I applied to Semester at Sea, and I haven’t stopped traveling abroad since that time.
TM: Do you have a favorite family-friendly travel spot? How about a romantic escape you love?
RP: There are so many great family-friendly spots I love to visit! Here in the US, we used to travel to San Diego 4-5x a year. The weather is great, and there are so many fun things to do with kids! We actually moved to San Diego this summer.
My favorite places to take the kids abroad are Costa Rica for an adventure trip, and Turks & Caicos for a relaxing vacation.
TM: When the time is right, and it is safe to travel, where is someplace you dream of visiting?
RP: I’ve traveled to over 48 countries, and I have dreams of visiting so many more! A few on my bucket list that I haven’t yet visited include Vietnam, Thailand, Fiji, and Bali.
