One of the best bonuses about raising a family in Southern California is that it’s also home to some the world’s most famous theme parks. Families from all over the world fly into Los Angeles every year for vacations and to visit and sometimes stay for days and weeks at the theme parks in our very own backyard.
Whether its Six Flags Magic Mountain, where thrill seekers can enjoy over 100 exciting rides, Universal Studios, where movie lovers can engage with movie characters and storylines, or classic Disneyland Resort, where a world of fantastical dreams come true, and all the other theme parks in Los Angeles and beyond, I have special memories at all of them.
One of those memories came up just last week and I wanted to share it with you, hoping that it inspires you to experience theme parks and travel with your children, too. This is a story of a special connection that only a mother would understand. It’s one of those that you could never plan and it just reminds me of how special life is.
The moment happened when I drove about 90 miles south from Los Angeles, down to the San Diego suburb of Carlsbad, where you’ll find a theme park that is simply awesome. It has something for everybody, regardless of age or interest. It is the LEGOLAND California Resort.
When it opened in 1999, I had the honor of attending the grand opening when my children were young, and it was a go-to favorite of the kids then and it still is, this time they aren’t playing (well at little). Last week I had the pleasure of returning there with my son, who is now a grown 30 year old man with his own video production company to attend the media preview for the latest addition to the theme park, The LEGO Movie World, where the immersive world of the hit movies come to life.
The memories made in 1999 flooded my mind as we spent two days exploring the park, reminiscing over the experiences he had as a kid, and enjoying some mother son bonding time. Oh, and for me, it was fun to visit with him again, but with the additional title of “boss,” since my son shoots and produces a lot of the video content you see on The Travel Mom website and on our social channels, for our giveaways and the branded content we produce.
I encourage you to visit all the theme parks where you live, too. Memories can be made anywhere, but there’s something special about theme parks for sure. If you’re planning on visiting LEGOLAND California, here’s everything else you need to know.
Besides the family memories that last a lifetime, one of my favorite things about LEGOLAND California is how easy it is to get around. It’s very manageable and enjoyable. It feels airy, clean, and it’s filled with flowers, greenery, and plants everywhere.
There are two unique hotels at LEGOLAND California, and while they have their differences, I love them both.
For the ultimate LEGO experience, enjoy a day at LEGOLAND California and a night at LEGOLAND Hotel. There are LEGO themed rooms – Pirate, Kingdom, Adventure, LEGO NINJAGO or LEGO Friends. The best part is that it’s located at the main entrance of LEGOLAND California.
You can also stay at the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel, where every brick is bursting with LEGO enchantment and captivating tales of Kingdoms from distant lands. The hotel features 250 LEGO Castle themed rooms with your choice of Knights & Dragons, Royal Princess or Magic Wizard.
If you can’t decide which one is better, I recommend letting your kids pick based on their personal interests. It’s one way to make the whole family feel engaged, plus they get to experience the fun of planning a vacation.
Download the LEGOLAND California app. It’s the best way to plan your trip to LEGOLAND California and use during your adventures. You can purchase tickets, find out current wait times, receive exclusive offers and discounts, find out what rides, attractions, shops and restaurants are nearby, set reminders, check height requirements and so much more. Download the LEGOLAND California app in the Apple App Store or on Google Play.
If you’re wondering about safety and cleanliness, LEGOLAND California has done a great job on making it safe to play. They have an extensive plan of enhanced health and safety measures including reduced capacity, cashless payments, social distancing practices and enhanced cleaning regimes.
