Before I was The Travel Mom, I was an early childhood educator. I taught preschool classes, mommy and me and parenting workshops. Often times I was asked if I had any tips for traveling with toddlers and I want to share what I believe to be the most important one.
Little children are creatures of habit. They follow sequence, order, and routine. Toddlers don’t look at the clock and realize it’s 8 pm so it is time for bed. Children know when it’s bedtime because of what happens before that.
At home, your nightly routine might consist of a bath, a story and then sleep. If this is what you do at home, do it when you travel. There are also routines around meals, naptime and potty training. Do your best to stick to these and your toddler will be able to follow.
Whether you are headed over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house or embarking on a Caribbean cruise this tip will help make it smoother sailing for the entire family.
